Number Crunch: Nine in 10 Accountants, Auditors Struggle to Find Talent, Global Caseware Surveys Reveal

Feb 21 2023

Surveys show firms adopting new technologies at a rapid pace  to attract and retain talent, connect with clients and increase insights.

Toronto, ON – February 21, 2023 – What is the fastest-growing challenge facing accounting firms and internal audit departments today? More than 90% point to hiring and retaining skilled accountants and auditors. Some are even turning away business due to a shortage of staff.

That’s the finding of two newly released reports by leading software provider Caseware International, which surveyed more than 6,000 accountants and auditors globally.

According to the surveys, to tackle this challenge and boost client collaboration, accounting and auditing organizations are ramping up the adoption of advanced technologies such as cloud services, data analytics and business intelligence.

The Caseware reports – 2023 State of Accounting Firms Trends Report and 2023 State of Internal Audit Trends Report – offer a glimpse into how accounting firms and internal auditors worldwide are adjusting to changing business environments. Responses were gathered from more than 4,100 accountants and 2,300 auditors.

The talent crunch

Nearly 35% of accountants cite finding the right talent among their three biggest practice management issues over the past year, compared to just 14% of accountants who cited it last year – making finding talent the fastest-rising industry challenge.

More than 90% of accountants and 95% of auditors surveyed find it either challenging or extremely challenging to hire skilled talent. When retaining talent, more than 85% of accountants and 90% of auditors said it is either somewhat or extremely difficult.

“With unemployment rates at historic lows, it’s not surprising that accounting firms and audit teams are having difficulty finding and retaining staff,” said David Osborne, CEO at Caseware. “Companies seeking top talent need to employ innovative strategies to address this challenge, such as improving compensation, implementing more flexible work policies and adopting technologies that allow staff to work more creatively and efficiently.”

Technology challenges

Other top practice management challenges cited by accountants relate to new ways of working, including communicating with clients in a virtual world (40%), using new technologies (38%) and adjusting to working remotely (35%). Auditors pointed to moving from manual to digital processes (38%) and adopting new audit technology (36%) as the main issue.

“Accounting and auditing professionals are still coming to grips with technologies that most were forced to adopt due to the COVID-19 pandemic and are placing a heightened sense of urgency on adopting new technologies to enhance their work processes, collaboration and insights,” said Davis Jackson, Chief Commercial Officer at Caseware.

According to the reports, almost 70% of accounting firms expect their rate of technology adoption to increase over the next two years, while more than 80% of internal audit teams are already employing cloud technology.

“Clients today expect their accountants and auditors to deliver more than just numbers – they want deeper insights to help direct their business strategies, so it’s not surprising that more and more professionals are turning to intelligent technology to enhance their role as strategic advisors,” Jackson said.

Other highlights include:

2023 State of Accounting Firms Trends Report

  • While nearly 80% of accounting firms use client collaboration tools, almost 52% said their client engagement process is only somewhat efficient.
  • Nearly three-quarters (74%) of accounting firms plan to adopt new cloud technologies over the next two years.
  • More than half of accountants (56%) have adopted business intelligence software to advise and guide clients on their finances and risk factors, while 30% say they are planning to invest in it.

2023 State of Internal Audit Trends Report

  • More than 60% of auditors said the amount of advisory services they provide has grown over the past year.
  • Analytics are a critical operational tool for more than 55% of internal audit teams.
  • Nearly 42% of auditors said their most significant internal pressure is to prove their value to their organization.

Boring No More: Accountants, Auditors See Themselves as Creative, Curious and Adventurous, Study Shows

May 18 2022

Toronto, Ont., May 18, 2022. Creative, curious and adventurous may not be traits normally associated with accountants and auditors, but a recent study shows that’s just how a growing number of industry professionals see themselves.

The research – conducted by leading software provider Caseware International through interviews with nearly 500 accountants and auditors globally – suggests that the profession is shifting toward more insights-driven and human-centered work.

According to the study, some 37% of accountants and auditors surveyed place a high value on creative problem-solving. Nearly half (47%) say they are adventurous when it comes to trying new technology. Accounting professionals say they want to spend more time collaborating with their clients and colleagues, and their focus has shifted from analyzing what has happened to anticipating what happens next.

“We’ve been listening closely to our customers for over 30 years, and a clear message from this research is that the industry will look significantly different in the future than it does today,” said David Osborne, CEO of Caseware. “What has traditionally been seen as a tedious, number-crunching profession is rapidly transforming into one that’s dynamic, driven by analytical insights and focused on creative collaboration. Cloud-based solutions, intelligent automation and other innovations are sparking new business opportunities and opening up new career paths.”

Caseware, the leading software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider to the auditing and accounting industry, conducted the study from August through December 2021. The findings are already being applied in the company’s product and service development and have also informed its newly-unveiled rebrand. Among the insights shared by survey respondents is that many have been developing their people skills in order to foster closer working relationships with clients and teammates. They are also increasingly conscious of their potential to create lasting impact, the research shows.

“More than ever, we see auditors, accountants and financial analysts taking pride in the fact that their work benefits and improves the world,” Osborne said. “They play a key role, for example, in helping organizations move beyond traditional financial disclosure to share environmental, social, and governance (ESG) information. Whether accounting professionals are detecting and preventing fraud, ensuring systems work properly, or helping companies operate both efficiently and ethically, the people who count on Caseware are making a difference.”

Caseware announces rebranding

To support and drive the industry’s transformational change, Caseware has announced a global rebranding as it begins rolling out the next generation of automation, analytics and problem-solving tools – all designed to enrich the experience of its customers as they help their clients achieve unprecedented performance.

The new Caseware brand was revealed in Toronto at CwX, the company’s first global annual conference. In his remarks to the combined in-person and online audience, Osborne committed to providing customers with versatile, innovative tools that enable them to do their best work. The CEO also shared the company’s renewed sense of purpose: “Caseware is in business to help our customers work more effectively, gain deeper insights and see further along the road that leads to change for the better. We succeed by advancing our customers’ success, and we help them drive transformation by designing technology that reflects our deep understanding of what they hope to achieve – and why.”

Central to the company’s new product offering is a cutting-edge, cloud-based business intelligence tool called Sherlock, which consolidates data across multiple engagements and generates powerful insights that can then be leveraged to sharpen efficiency and accelerate growth. Officially launched on May 19, Sherlock is the first in a series of market-changing products Caseware plans to introduce over the next three to five years.

“As we build the tools that are helping transform the future of accounting, we’re also helping individual customers pursue careers fueled by curiosity and creative intelligence,” said Osborne, who joined Caseware as CEO in June 2021 following a strategic investment in the company by private equity firm Hg Capital in October 2020.

With Hg’s financial backing and under Osborne’s leadership, Caseware has experienced exponential growth. In the last year alone, the company has added over 250 new team members worldwide. Solidifying its position as the leading provider of cloud-based audit and assurance software, Caseware has also expanded its global footprint by acquiring three of its distributors – in the US, Denmark and the Netherlands.

“These are exciting times for the accounting and auditing industry, as digital transformation takes us to places we never imagined,” Osborne said. “We’re looking forward to equipping more accountants and auditors around the world with solutions that meet their high expectations for speed, accuracy, responsiveness, and equally important, their desire for easier collaboration and insight-driven problem-solving. Supported by our thoughtfully-designed tools and platforms, they can focus on what matters most: building stronger relationships with their colleagues and clients –  and we’ll be right there alongside them as a trusted, innovative partner.”

Caseware Named York University’s Co-op Employer of the Year

Nov 06 2020

“Caseware is not your average coffee-run internship.”

That’s how Software Developer Ari Dokmecian describes his experience working at Caseware as part of the organization’s internship program, which York University recently acknowledged by naming Caseware its 2019 Co-op Employer of the Year. Domecian expanded on his thoughts by elaborating on how it made him feel truly prepared for the workforce ahead.

“I didn’t feel like an intern so much as a regular employee,” he added. “Towards the end of my internship I even got to show off some stuff I worked on to some high up execs in the company. The experience was truly unparalleled.”

It was this kind experience which helped Caseware achieve York University’s recent honour and join the company of notable past winners like Hydro One, IBM, Magna and Ellis Don, all heavyweight employers in their own right.

“No one exemplifies this dedication to our community of learners better than software solutions company, Caseware,” York University stated after the recent announcement. “We are proud to announce Caseware as the 2019 Co-op Employer of the Year for their commitment to hiring a large volume of students, providing a modern and agile working environment, competitive salary, supportive HR team, and a rewarding and challenging work experience.”

The university acknowledged that, although this win is Caseware’s first at what are called the Lassonde Awards, Caseware has been a valued partner for the last two-and-a-half years, providing 18 students with co-op positions, spanning 45 work terms in Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Software Engineering fields.

“The opportunities that companies like Caseware provide our students allow for enhanced learning outside of the classroom, offering our students a remarkable experiential education experience,” says Jane Goodyer, Dean of the Lassonde School of Engineering.

Dokmecian’s fellow co-op student Juntao Han agrees that the learning experience at Caseware was unparalleled.

“As an entry-level professional, words cannot describe how much I have learned in the past four months,” he explains. “There is no shortage of meaningful and relevant projects, and the guidance and assistance I have received from senior team members have been exceptional.”

Sam Guraya, another software developer who participated in Caseware’s internship program, also had glowing reviews.

“My co-op experience at Caseware was amazing. Caseware provided many opportunities for mentorship and learning while working on challenging problems that face their clients,” Guraya said. “Most importantly, I always felt like I was a part of the team as I participated in sprints and was able to easily contribute ideas and solutions to problems everyone was working on.”
